Senior Scientist (Hybrid) Job Description Summary The Senior Scientist will be part of a multi-disciplinary Innovation team that is developing a variety of medical technologies and solutions with an initial focus on surgical and interventional devices. This is a technical position where the scientist will contribute significantly to exciting, high visibility projects and collaborations across the R&D portfolio. This position will be responsible for the development and testing of new biomaterials and formulations for a range of medical devices, including surgical implants and drug-device combination products. The candidate is expected to design new chemical formulations and/or biomaterials (hydrogels, coatings, resorbable polymers, viscoelastic materials etc.), and develop test methods for characterizing their physicochemical properties and functional performance. These materials will be utilized for enabling controlled release of drugs, designing tissue engineered products, and modulating biomaterial-tissue interactions impacting the performance of medical devices. Additional duties involve characterization of materials using analytical instrumentation and assessment of functional performance both in-vitro and in-vivo.The Scientist must be able to effectively collaborate with team members from varying backgrounds and should have strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have an interest in technically contributing to areas beyond medical devices and drug delivery systems over time due to the dynamic nature of the Innovation team and its programs. Duties and responsibilities: Provide subject matter expertise in drug formulation and delivery technologies, polymeric biomaterials development and characterization, and drug-biomaterials-tissue interactions.Design and execute experimental studies relating to the development and testing of medical devicesAuthor/review SOPs, test/project reports, and other documents as required to execute and document studies in the laboratory.Carry out technical assessments of drug delivery technologies/coatings for medical devices.Prepare presentations and reports to effectively communicate technical results to various stakeholders.Investigate and resolve technical problems, and handle different workstreams to meet program objectives and timelines.Work with project team leadership to ensure a smooth transition of projects from the Innovation phase to product development. Required: Experience developing polymeric biomaterials and/or controlled drug release formulationsHands-on experience using analytical instrumentation and materials characterization tools (such as rheometer, Instron, spectroscopic methods, DSC, GPC, etc. and interpreting resultant data)Ability to plan, coordinate, and conduct scientific experiments and effectively analyze, interpret, and present experimental resultsAble to work both independently and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.Ability to adapt quickly to changes in program and project priorities.Strong oral and written communication skills and team collaborationCritical thinking, active listening, and strong written and verbal communication skills Preferred skills: Design of functional polymeric materialsSynthesis of small and/or large moleculesStructure-property characterization of soft materials.Knowledge of polymer processing methods (extrusion, thermoforming, 3D printing, etc.), resorbable materialsSolid understanding of drug development and drug delivery principles, ADME, PK/PD and drug elution studiesKnowledge of medical device development process Education Requirements :Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Polymer Science, Textiles or related fields is required. Advanced degree is preferred.Experience: PhD, MS + 3 years of relevant industry experience, or BS + 5 years of relevant industry experience is required. Work Environment: (if applicable)The candidate is expected to work in a research lab environment and may require working with chemicals, and biological materials (blood, tissues, etc.) via ex vivo/in vivo models.For certain roles at BD, employment is contingent upon the Company's receipt of sufficient proof that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
