Nature and Scope 30 hour / week | Part-time, non-exempt, salariedThis person is under the general supervision of the Senior Pastor and is responsible for Connections and Discipleship Ministries as described at St. John’s United Methodist Church.This person must understand church culture and possess a demonstrated ability to work collegially in a multi-staff setting. Must also be sympathetic to and uphold the mission of St. John’s UMC, the Illinois Great Rivers Conference, the United Methodist denomination, and the Christian faith, and will not knowingly impair the mission in any way. Duties and Responsibilities Participate in at least one opportunity annually for professional and/or faith development chosen by staff member and approved by Senior Pastor/SPRC. Integration/Collaboration with Outreach: Facilitate evangelism through events like Goshen Market, Community Concerts, Halloween Parade, and other opportunities to be invitational in the community. Facilitate healthy and helpful first steps into the life of the church by working with the welcome center, greeters, ushers, and other entry points into the church. Facilitate good follow-up with guests and visitors through the intentional use of the database and through inviting handoff correspondence. Help keep the pictorial directory up to date. Internal/External Communication: Facilitate the internal communication of the various mission areas, attending staff and ministry team meetings. Establish and maintain writing, publishing, and graphic style guidelines by educating pastors, staff and lay leadership. Maintain all email communication contact lists on church email platforms (Constant Contact). Maintain congregational phone list for the church phone/text tree communications platform (Call ‘Em All). Facilitate designing and printing all materials needed for ministry teams/congregants/staff on an as-needed basis. Includes such things as: quarterly finance statement envelopes, annual Stewardship Campaign materials, all bulk mailings, special event flyers and labels, postcards, business cards, etc. Oversight of the congregational website, content and links. Write copy, create graphic, video and photos needed to tell the congregational story. Assist with the production of internal video bulletin boards/graphics. Prepare press releases for congregational events and newsworthy occurrences. Primary writer and editor for all media platforms. Examples are web, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, text messaging. Publish weekly bulletin and newsletter. Write and send out weekly congregational email and special email communications (staff announcements, funeral announcements, etc.) as needed. Write weekly service Worship Notes and send instructional email to worship service participants and tech team. Oversee church Prayer Chain group and send prayer chain requests though church email platform (Constant Contact) as requested by congregants. Design and create all graphics including: sermon series, internal church happenings, special events, and other graphics as needed. Bridge to Study and Service: Collaborate with Adult Discipleship to help facilitate small groups and studies. Collaborate with Children Youth Family Ministry Coordinator for continuity in discipleship through the lifespan. Collaborate with Servant Ministry Coordinator to connect people with meaningful community service opportunities. Collaborate with the CNLD to connect people suitably with committee and team service opportunities. Collaborate with Congregational Care as staff care contact for: Following up with families with new babies. Connecting with families through funerals. Connecting with families through weddings. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule Part-time position of 30 hours per week. Attend staff, administrative council, and vision team meetings. Attend welcome luncheons. Attend worship services on a regular basis with rotation of services when possible in order to interact with as many people as possible. Office hours are flexible and will require some weekend and evening hours. A portion of the work may be done at home. The vacation schedule shall be in accordance with the church personnel policy. It is the responsibility of this position to keep the pastor and appropriate work area committees informed of vacation plans. Working Relationship This position is under the general supervision of the Senior Pastor in coordination with the Staff Parish Committee (SPRC). The Senior Pastor, in conjunction with the SPRC, determines employment. Compensation is recommended by the Senior Pastor and SPRC, and it is approved by the Administrative Council. Evaluation of this position will be prepared annually by the Senior Pastor in collaboration with the SPRC. Skills & Qualifications Education: bachelor’s degree Work experience or demonstratable skills in marketing and communications. Strong Christian faith with a genuine love for the body of Christ Demonstrated understanding of the United Methodist beliefs, doctrines, traditions, and social principals. Experience in teaching or Christian education. Strong management skills Ability to work in ministry team settings and consult across ministry areas. Able to work on tight deadlines, take initiative and work creatively without supervision. Knowledge of and ability to use social media for marketing, including Facebook page management Bible Gateway, Constant Contact, YouTube, and other social media programs. Strong knowledge of MS Office. Knowledge of Website Design and Management using SquareSpace. Knowledge of Constant Contact e-mail or similar platform. Good graphic design skills. Skills in video development. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop a plus. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to include public speaking.
