Contributes to the overall success of the Legal Department in Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives. Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing law, regulations, internal policies, and procedures. Accountabilities: Role Specific: Provides legal support and guidance to Scotiabank and Tangerine Bank, and their Canadian Banking and Wealth lines of business operating in Quebec, in particular with regard to the management of litigation claims and customer complaints, and other normal course operational legal needs. Also assists the Escalated Customer Complaints Office (ECCO), the Customer Complaints Appeals Office (CCAO), and Corporate Security in connection with the handling of customer and third-party claims and complaints. Assists the Senior Counsel for Quebec in the logging, tracking and management of litigation matters and complaints, and in the treatment of customer complaints, and in the management of external legal counsel in connection with the above. Engages with the above business lines in Quebec to review documentation, tools, special projects to provide advice and counsel on applicable Canadian and Quebec laws and regulations and on litigation risk thereunder, and assists in providing advice on reports submitted to regulators such as the FCAC. Provides subject matter expertise and support on Quebec regulatory matters to lawyers on the retail banking legal team. Provides practical, business-focused legal advice and support on Quebec litigation matters that impact retail financial products and services, and assist the above-mentioned business lines in managing litigation risk in line with Scotiabank’s policies, procedures and overall risk appetite.
