The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office will be considering applicants for the following employment opportunity: Network Administrator The Middlesex Sheriff’s Office (“MSO”) is seeking a qualified professional for the position of Network Administrator (“Administrator”) to work in the Information Technology (“IT”) Department at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction (“MJHOC”) located in Billerica, MA. The Administrator will be recommending and promoting technical and professional solutions to customers and providing first and second level support by voice, in person, and electronic means as required. The Administrator will also be troubleshooting laptops, desktops, mobile devices and accessories in a direct/phone capacity. The shift hours for this position are 3:00p.m. to 11:00p.m. and the days off are Sunday/Monday. The shift hours and days off are subject to change based on operational needs and at the discretion of management. This an exempt, full-time, at-will employment position that reports to the Director of Information Technology and/or the Superintendent. Additional responsibilities of the Administrator include, but are not limited to, the following: Allocating the necessary resources to resolve problems and queries in an effective and timely manner; Maintaining the database of tickets through regular follow up of problems and queries; Maintaining computer networks including Extreme Networks Layer 2/Layer 3 switches, Firewalls, VPNs, routers and other physical hardware; Installing and configuring of Extreme networks L2/L3 hardware; Configuring, optimizing, and hardening of Fortinet and Windows firewalls, updating virus protection software and data security systems to keep data and communications protected; Monitoring computer and network systems and implementing changes to improve network performance for all systems between Lan and Wan; Monitoring, configuring and maintaining camera network devices, camera database and switches for optimal performance; Troubleshooting, resolving, and communicating networking issues to other employees and management; Documenting and implementing of disaster recovery procedures; Maintaining current knowledge and understanding of security and networking best practices to offer the best solutions and protection to company systems; General network administration and management, including routers, switches and Wireless access points; Maintaining core IT infrastructure, including but not limited to, Operating systems, line of business applications, supporting applications, servers, email and end user devices; Attending relevant product seminars and skill courses and passing on relevant points to others on the IT team; Sharing information and best practice among the IT team; Developing technical processes to aid performance and efficiency; Supporting MSO’s security policy, with particular emphasis on the protection of sensitive information; Escalating problems to support team members by documenting the impact to the customer and by assigning an appropriate priority and resolution target timeframe; Documenting all troubleshooting steps, analysis and actions taken in an online ticketing system; ensuring that all tickets are updated with accurate and detailed information until problem resolution and customer satisfaction; Assessing when issues are creating difficulties that may require management attention and communicating this evaluation to support management; Continually optimizing the support process through drafting and maintaining support documentation and refining support procedures with a goal of reducing user issues; Participating in product testing prior to a software release and documenting the test results; Strong understanding of all relevant compliance policies as published by the MSO; Participating in on-call rotations, as needed; Other work duties as assigned by the Director of Information Technology, the Assistant Superintendent of Security or Superintendent. The individual selected for the position of Network Administrator must have the ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job. The individual selected shall also be cognizant of the confidential and sensitive nature of working in a law enforcement agency and must comply with all institutional rules regarding safety and security. Working Conditions: Based in a correctional facility and must respond to IT emergencies and be on-call and available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide a safe, secure environment for staff and inmates/detainees; Must be able to work on varied shifts, weekends, nights, holidays and subject to being forced to work over 8 hours depending on operational needs; During emergency situations and/or disorder management, the Administrator must respond to the MJHOC to facilitate the shutdown of network, servers and various security related systems within the secure perimeter; May encounter verbal and physical abuse from offenders and interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress; stand and walk for prolonged periods of time; be required to work alone in an isolated area and; work under exposure to adverse weather conditions. Lifting and securing computer equipment up to 65 lbs.; safely climbing a six (6) foot ladder; laying cross- connections of fiber and copper cables and; following precise technical instructions on deployment of cabling and equipment. Qualifications: Associate’s Degree in computer science preferred or equivalent combination of discipline, education and experience; Three (3) to Five (5) plus years of experience in server software and hardware preferred; Three (3) to Five (5) plus years of experience in Windows Server 2016, 2012 and 2008 (Active Directory, IIS, DFS, NPS, DNS/DHCP, GPO), Exchange 2016, SQL Server 2012, and Online, Antivirus, and Backup software preferred; Experience with Windows desktop client operating systems (Windows 10, Windows 11) and applications (Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2019); MacIntosh, VMWARE and Group Policy Management Imaging software experience a plus; Experience with disaster recovery management; Experience with Avaya PBX equipment and/or other voice over IP (VOIP) systems; Microsoft, Cisco CCNP/CCIE, CompTIA Network and other similar certifications preferred; Proven knowledge of internal workings of networks, servers and computers and the ability to monitor system performance, identify and remediate root causes; Work independently, as well as, and with other internal departments in a fast-paced environment and execute close attention to detail and a desire to learn new skills; Ability to actively participate in the planning and execution of various short- and long-term projects; Strong written, communication, organizational, analytical, problem-solving and time-management skills; Ability to complete multiple projects in a timely and accurate manner while maintaining comprehensive and cohesive records. In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. Must have an active valid driver’s license, the right to legally operate a motor vehicle in Massachusetts and pass a criminal background check. Salary: Starting annual base salary from $83,595.35 plus additional benefits.
