Job Description About This Role The External Innovation Lead (Senior Director) is an individual-contributor role primarily responsible for leading the search and evaluation process to proactively identify and scientifically/technically evaluate external opportunities for partnering or acquisition in therapeutic areas (TAs) of growth for Biogen. This is a hybrid role based in Cambridge, MA. What You'll Do Proactively identify and provide expert scientific and technical assessment of therapeutic opportunities and promising science and technologies across the preclinical and clinical spectrum Work closely with Research/Development/Medical/Commercial/Corporate Strategy to assess strategic, technical and portfolio fit, and quality of external opportunities. Efficiently benchmark and prioritize new opportunities for further evaluation. Identify new areas of innovation and growth opportunities across the TA value chain. Lead focused cross-functional teams in the early evaluation of opportunities for further diligence, with focus on the scientific and technical merit to advance (or exclude) opportunities. Integrate disparate data sets with an interdisciplinary perspective. Lead deep scientific and clinical cross-functional due diligence teams to deliver distilled/differentiated viewpoints, to identify key outstanding questions and to articulate rational next steps toward identifying and developing investment proposals for presentation to senior leadership. Independently lead mid-complexity cross-functional deal team to advance external opportunities to term sheet. Ensure effective handover to the deal team lead post-term sheet and support until completion of the project. Establish key networks, both internally and externally, to survey proactively the emerging scientific and technological competitive landscape in therapeutic/disease areas that are (or might become) of strategic interest, including preclinical through full-development programs (and sometimes approved assets). Scout new external opportunities by contributing to systematic screens, participating in both business partnering conferences and scientific/clinical congresses, and maintaining a strong scientific/business network across the biotech/pharma/VC/academic/non-profit ecosystem. Must have subject-matter expertise and understanding of the scientific, technical and competitive landscape(s), to develop scenarios and prosecution rationales and to make thoughtful recommendations that will enable key senior stakeholders to position the company optimally to compete successfully in highly dynamic environments. Qualifications Who You Are You have in-depth knowledge of therapeutic areas from either a research or clinical/translational background with subject-matter expertise and understanding of the scientific, technical and competitive landscape(s), to develop scenarios and prosecution rationales, and to make thoughtful recommendations to senior stakeholders. You are able to demonstrate an ability to rapidly understand, distill and clearly communicate complicated, and often limited, multidisciplinary information. You are innately curious, yet simultaneously disciplined in your focus. Required Skills Minimum of BS in the life sciences or related field, PhD is strongly preferred 15+ years' experience professionally demonstrating a detailed understanding of and execution within the biopharmaceutical R&D continuum Minimum of 10 years of interdisciplinary experience on preclinical and/or clinical therapeutic project teams Experience in search and evaluation or competitive intelligence Business acumen for optimal science-business interfacing Ability to problem-solve, think critically on their feet and deliver results in a timely manner and at the highest levels of excellence Ability to build effective working relationships within a short period of time Experience in leading cross-functional teams Strong project management, presentation and communication skills - driving diverse teams to clear GO/NO GO decisions Ability to work in an intense, fast paced, matrixed, global work environment with minimal supervision.
