The Department of Natural Resources and Renewables is responsible for the development, management, conservation and protection of forest, mineral, parks and wildlife resources and the administration of the province's Crown land. About Our Opportunity As the Tree Improvement Worker to carry out field backssments and maintenance duties in provincial seed orchards and tree improvement test sites, across Nova Scotia. Primary Accountabilities Under the direction of the Tree Improvement Forester, the Tree Improvement Worker is responsible for the backssment and maintenance of provincial tree seed orchards and tree improvement test sites including: • Pruning, fertilizing, mowing, competition control, and other maintenance tasks as they arise • Overseeing orchard cone harvests • Conducting orchard pest surveys • Collection of soil and/or foliage samples • General use and maintenance of ride on mowers, small tractors, chainsaws and clearing saws, pole saws, string trimmers, and hand/power tools. • Layout and planting of newly established tree improvement test sites • Conducting seedling health and survival backssments • Use of tree mensuration equipment and data loggers • Collection and extraction of pollen and related tasks • You may be required to operate Department vehicles, including off-road vehicles • Occasional office work (data entry and record keeping) Qualifications and Experience A two-year forestry,.
