Host/Caretaker, under the general supervision of the park foreman, participates in the maintenance and upkeep of grounds, buildings, facilities and park equipment. Responsibilities are to ensure that the campgrounds and parks are clean, safe attractive, orderly, and healthy in order to provide a pleasant outdoor environment for our guests and visitors. The Caretakers will be responsible for the upkeep and cleanliness of all areas of the park in addition to reporting general maintenance concerns as they arise. Work also includes custodial tasks. Caretakers will also assist in inspecting, moving and setting up equipment that is necessary for events, rentals and day-to-day park operations. This position will also be a campground host, acting as a good-will ambassador between campers and park staff, providing information to park staff on potential problems, disseminating information to the public, and courteously enforcing the rules and guidelines of the park amongst a diverse group of guests. The Host needs to be familiar with facility and program activities when interacting with guests. This is a seasonal/temporary position. Principle Duties and Responsibilities CARETAKER: Perform light cleaning work in the assigned park area (i.e. litter/debris removal, sweeping and stocking of comfort stations, ash removal from fire sites, disposal of garbage barrel waste, etc.) Perform light maintenance work in the assigned park area (i.e. clean & level beach); Maintain a working knowledge of and adhere to all County policies and procedures, risk management and safety programs and procedures; Perform humane rodent trapping as needed, with approval from Park Foreman; Maintaining written records of complaints and criticism of park facilities and reporting to the Park Foreman; Maintain awareness of activities or situations that require immediate attention of Parks Foreman; Contact necessary authorities in the event of an emergency; Offer quality guest experiences to promote repeat customers; Must be able to deal with conflicts (late partiers); Employee must have the ability to execute details of work according to specific instructions and be able to adapt to frequent and varying changes in the work schedule; Inspects park areas on a regular basis to identify park buildings and grounds maintenance needs and plans methods to meet those needs; Prepares general reports including narrative regarding park buildings and grounds maintenance activities; Other duties as assigned. HOST: Relay visitor comments and concerns to appropriate park staff members; Police campground for litter; notify a park ranger upon viewing a violation of park regulations or a safety hazard; Check comfort station and vault toilets and contact staff about cleaning needs, mechanical problems, or any deficiencies; Hosts may be asked to assist park staff members in planning, organizing, and carrying out special park events, projects, and interpretive programs; Serve as the Central Answering Point by welcoming guests and park users by way of providing general information (answering questions, explaining regulations, providing directions, explaining park rules, and explaining available services) regarding their stay; Routinely confirm and document that visitors and guests have the appropriate permit and payment for park entrance and utilization; Educate and enforce park rules and regulations; Maintain reservations for available shelters within the Park; Retain and submit camping receipts; Inform campers and park users of impending severe weather and provide additional guidance regarding the need to evacuate the premises; Enforcing all safety standards and guidelines while displaying courtesy; Key Relationships General Public Parks Foreman Parks Director Decision Making Authority Problems encountered are routine, somewhat repetitive, and generally solved by following clear directions and procedures. This position has the ability to craft and respond to basic communication needs arising from incoming requests without gaining authority. Although this position requires independent discretion, decisions are coordinated with the Parks Foreman. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stand, talk or hear, and walk, and requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; may require standing for prolonged periods of time; the employee is regularly required to walk on uneven and rough terrain as well as paved and unpaved trails. Work is performed primarily in an indoor/outdoor environment, with occasional travel from site to site; exposure to dust, grease, odors, and cleaning agents, chemicals, fumes, mists, gases, and oils. Duties may result in exposure to human body fluids; work hours include shift work to minimize disruption of daily operational activities. Work is usually performed outdoors, and employees will be subject to extremes of weather and temperatures. The employee may occasionally lift, carry, or move light to moderately heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities this job requires include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud. This position is a very active position requiring standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and, at times, climbing. Employees may encounter wildlife, spiders, snakes, poison ivy, and other allergies. This is a seasonal/temporary position (stipend); service may be up to a maximum of nine (9) months, either served consecutively or over a twelve (12) month period, but will not exceed twelve (12) months from the effective date of hire. This position is not benefit-eligible. Education, Certification, and/or License High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and 1 - 2 years maintenance, grounds-keeping related experience and/or training; Prior experience working as a host in a recreation facility or cleaning/maintenance role is preferred. A valid Driver’s License is required. Knowledge, Skills, and Experience General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment utilized in the maintenance and cleaning of grounds, parks, and county facilities; General knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work; General knowledge of custodial practices, supplies, and equipment; General knowledge of safety regulations, occupational hazards, and related safety precautions in the work; Thorough knowledge of the methods and principles of park buildings and grounds maintenance; Thorough knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials used in park buildings and grounds maintenance and minor building cleaning tasks; Knowledge of the principles and practices of acting as a Campground Host. Well-developed interpersonal skills to deal positively and effectively with guests and park users to effectively enforce campground rules; Ability to develop and maintain productive relationships with visitors, community groups, other county departments, and the general public; Ability to carry out duties at two or more visitor sites with multiple functions; Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in written form; Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely; Ability to work with a diverse population; Ability to work independently with little direction; Ability to exemplify the County's PRIDE philosophy by his or her actions. Ability to maintain records of work activities; Supervision Received: This position will be directly supervised by the Parks Foreman. Exercised: This position will not be directly supervised.
