Maintenance Worker - Lower Heart Water Board

This position will perform facilities and levee maintenance work part-time under the supervision of the Lower Heart Water Board. The number of hours will vary and be dependent upon seasonal needs. During late spring, summer, and early fall, this position may spend up to 40 hours per week engaged in maintenance work. During the winter months, this position will be engaged for approximately 10 hours per week. Principle Duties and Responsibilities Assist the Corps of Engineers with annual inspections of the dike system and inspections of confined spaces (manholes) Inspect and maintain valves located in a confined space (manholes) Lubricate and operate operating valves to ensure they are operating at peak performance levels Patrol the dike to assure the area is free of debris Maintain and operate motorized equipment including mower, weed eater, front end loader, skid steer, hoist, and pumping equipment Maintain the shop in a safe, clean, and orderly manner Maintain lawns, hedges, trees, shrubbery, walkways, and other areas by cleaning, planting, watering, fertilizing, trimming, mowing, sweeping, raking and spraying for weeds Perform minor maintenance repairs such as changing light bulbs and worn sockets, replacing faucets, washers, and toilet; Complete minor repairs and adjustments to pipes such as extending sprinkler systems, raising and replacing sprinkler heads, removing and replacing valves and faucets; occasionally assists in the various trades as required Manage the vermin population while maintaining compliance with federal, state and local regulations Perform snow and ice removal activities consistently throughout the winter season Perform light carpentry activities as needed Perform other skilled maintenance work on levee system Key Relationships Lower Heart Water Board (Oversight) Corps of Engineers (Dike Inspections) NDSU Extension (Pesticide) Game and Fish (Vermin Control) Fish and Wildlife Service (trapping) Morton County Weed Department (Spray Chemicals) Decision Making Authority This position has the authority to make minor decisions regarding maintenance activities with Board oversight. When performing activities with a moderate- to high-risk to safety, this position will engage support from the Morton County Highway Department. This type of support will serve as a safety representative during those moderate- to high-risk activities. The incumbent’s physical, mental and emotional condition must be commensurate with the demands of the position. CONSTANT: Incumbent will be exposed to ongoing public contact. Incumbent will be required to maintain an on-call status to aid response in emergency situations. FREQUENT: Incumbent will be exposed to potentially hazardous activities due to the levee system Incumbent will be required to climb into and out of confined spaces Incumbent will be required to work in adverse and inclement weather conditions to include extreme temperatures Incumbent may be may be exposed to, or come into contact with: chemicals and solvents, moving equipment, dirt, dust, exhaust fumes, fuels, grease, herbicides, ivy, lubricants, paints, oils, vegetation, weeds, and other construction and maintenance materials Incumbent will need to have near, mid-range, far and depth perception vision capabilities At times, the incumbent will be exposed to constituents who may present behavioral challenges OCCASIONAL: Incumbent will need to have the ability to properly lift and carry up to 100 pounds on an inconsistent basis, with or without help or an aid device. During periods of emergency or high need, the incumbent will be required to work extended hours. Education, Certification and License High School Diploma or GED Equivalent; and Preferable experience in a comparable position; North Dakota Driver’s License Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Ability to read, understand and apply written instructions and guidelines regarding work schedules, work assignments, safety practices and board directives; Knowledge of procedures and methods of general maintenance Knowledge of Board policies, procedures and expectations of performance management Knowledge of safety rules and precaution for an accident, incident or exposure Skill in operating office equipment, computers and applicable software Ability to work safely and independently Ability to manage time effectively Ability to operate, maintain and do minor repairs on basic tools and equipment Ability to safely operate basic equipment such as a mower, weed eater, tractor and pump systems Ability to make sound decisions by using professional judgment Ability to consistently exhibit a high level of tact, courtesy and integrity Ability to work in adverse weather conditions Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing Ability to build, rebuild and maintain effective working relationships with Board personnel, local government representatives, county board members, state and federal officials, and the public Supervision Received: This position will be directly supervised by the Lower Heart Water Board. Exercised: This position will not directly supervise.
