Pre-Authorization Specialist Duties and Responsibilities: Obtains prior authorization on surgical procedures, studies, and clinic procedures as required. Communicates those authorizations or lack thereof, either to the Surgery Scheduler, patient and/or the physicians. Communicates the financial aspects of the patient's surgical and medical care with the patient. This includes a written explanation of fee schedules provided prior to surgery and documented in the chart. Works with the Business office staff on payment mechanisms and communicates about the financial responsibilities. Keeps work area neat, clean, and organized. Uses equipment properly. Reports equipment malfunctions/problems and follows-up appropriately. Makes suggestions for organization's improvements. Other duties as required. Qualifications: Minimum of a high school diploma or completion of equivalent education level is required. Prefer two years of college education or experience in the medical field. Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and communication skills. Must be skilled in medical terminology with knowledge of surgical procedures, including ICD-10 and CPT coding. Experience with pre-authorizations and referrals required. Strong computer skills required. Able to follow directions quickly and efficiently with varying workloads and interruptions. Must be able to work well under pressure and deal with co-workers in a positive manner. The ability to solve problems, resolve errors, make corrections and improvements and make decisions in a logical, reasonable manner. The ability to accept instruction and constructive criticism and to apply such to follow through to affect changes. The ability to fill in for personnel and to function effectively in emergency situations. The ability to determine requirements for maintaining patient care in conformance with recognized standards. The ability to communicate with employees, Administrator, and physicians and maintain effective public relations with both physicians and patients utilizing tact, courtesy, and diplomacy.
