Job Title : Cardiac Sonographer Department : Cardiac Services; Cayuga Heart Institute Reports To : Cardiac Service Line Echocardiographic Laboratory Supervisor Job Summary : The Cardiac Sonographer performs basic to advanced cardiac ultrasound services and procedures for adult patients such as transthoracic, transesophageal and stress. They must be familiar with approved clinical protocols for each type of cardiovascular ultrasound examination he or she performs, the sonographer also must be able to analyze the patient's clinical history fully, in order to identify the purpose of the examination, frame the clinical question that the examination is intended to answer, and expand the examination as necessary to answer the clinical question. Job Responsibilities include : - Perform advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures utilizing a variety of equipment and techniques and makes the necessary measurements required for interpretation to obtain accurate, high-quality results. Identifies and defines cardiac abnormalities and extends the scope of the examination appropriately, deviating from standard techniques when necessary and correlating invasive and noninvasive cardiac diagnostic test results with cardiac anatomy and function - May assist physicians in the procedure rooms and operating rooms by performing echocardiograph studies to aid them in proceeding with complex procedures to decrease risk factors. Assists in performing transesophageal studies with cardiologist, calculating appropriate measurements. - Review patient chart and history; utilize imaging protocols and standards; enter patient demographics on ultrasound machine; utilize proper patient positioning techniques to obtain optimal image quality; obtain all measurements required for study; end and transfer study to cardiology MERGE; access preliminary diagnostic report and formulate an initial interpretation for the reading cardiologist - Notifies the cardiologist of urgent pathologies noted on the cardiovascular exams. - Record statistics and performs daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment, reporting all malfunctions as appropriate. Cleans equipment and work space and follows infection control guidelines and all other applicable state/federal guidelines and laws - Act as a resource to other staff, physicians and students regarding equipment, techniques, procedures and studies to optimize patient care. Work closely with cardiac sonographer lab supervisor to ensure quality processes and protocols are adhered to and assist with IAC accreditation activities as delegated. Implement protocols as new technology evolves, and ensures system echocardiography standards are implemented and adhered to. - Explain procedure with instructions, to ensure patient cooperation, patient safety and optimal results; assist patient during transfer from wheelchair, stretcher or bed to exam table; provide individualized patient care ( i.e. request interpreter, ambulation, toileting, etc.) as needed - Performs neonatal congenital echocardiograms referred to by neonatologist with telemedicine technology as needed. - Is flexible in assuming other appropriate responsibilities not noted above. Requirements : Education - Essential: High School Diploma or GED. Completion of a two-year Allied Health degree and successful completion of a 12-month CAAHEP approved program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography preferred. Experience - One year of experience in a certified echocardiography laboratory preferred. Licensure - Certification from ARDMS or CCI is required within six months of date of hire required. Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) via the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) of Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). Physical Requirements - Ability to stand/sit for long periods while performing ultrasound studies. Ability to push ultrasound equipment throughout hospital for bedside testing. Schedule: Work 4 - 10 hr days with call to cover NICU on evenings and weekends.
