Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Planning Director, this position is responsible for providing professional planning services for complex and large-scale projects. This position is eligible for step pay increases within our Non-Union Grade 10 Wage Scale . Top end of the current wage scale for this position is $90,708.80/yr . Essential Job Functions: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties, which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. 1. Conducts complex planning studies to include conducting research, organizing, and evaluating data, and preparing and presenting reports.2. Assists local communities with planning activities to include providing professional guidance, on-site inspections, site plan review, and other technical assistance.3. Provides customer service to other departments, outside agencies, and the general public regarding planning issues.4. Attends, participates, and may facilitate various meetings and committees.5. Recommends and identifies alternatives on planning related issues.6. Serves as the planning liaison with local communities to include assessing needs and coordinating services.7. Gathers and compiles data and prepares and presents graphical presentations.8. Keeps abreast of legislative and regulatory developments, new administrative techniques, and current issues through continued education and professional growth. Attends conferences, workshops, and seminars as appropriate.9. Perform all other duties as assigned. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Requirements include the following: Bachelor's Degree in planning or related field and five years of experience as a professional planner. The County, at its discretion, may consider an alternative combination of formal education and work experience. American Institute of Certified Planners certification is required, or ability to achieve within 2 years of employment. Michigan Vehicle Operator's License. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of land use and urban planning and development, and applicate local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Considerable knowledge of specialization such as housing, zoning, historic preservation and economic development, research methods, mathematical and statistical principles related to urban growth and development and planning and zoning enabling legislation. Skill in assembling and analyzing data and preparing comprehensive and accurate reports. Skill in effectively communicating ideas and concepts orally and in writing. Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with County employees, contractors to the County, representatives of other governmental units, professional contacts, elected officials, and the public. Ability to assess situations, solve problems, work effectively under stress, within deadlines, and in emergency situations.
