Now Offering Student Loan Repayment up to $10,800 Position Overview: Performs various chemical, microscopic and bacteriologic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Applies techniques used in the fields of microbiology, molecular diagnostics, blood banking, hematology, chemistry and serology. Records test results, quality control, remedial action and instrument maintenance performed. Performs managerial duties in the absence of the Laboratory Technical Director. In conjunction with the Laboratory Technical Director and Medical Director, performs technical and regulatory oversight of the Microbiology Department in the Laboratory which includes: monitoring continual compliance to federal, state and/or local regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies, acting as a technical resource for staff, maintaining essential equipment function checks, reviewing and developing policies and procedures, preparing and overseeing department quality assurance/improvement and quality control programs. Essential Functions : · Responsible for examining specimens for acceptability, performance of laboratory procedures and reporting of test results. · Responsible for careful handling of chemicals and infectious material to protect all laboratory personnel. · Responsible for proper care, maintenance and function checks of scientific laboratory equipment and judicious use of laboratory materials. · Responsible for supervising the Microbiology Department including reviewing culture results, manual entry and quality control logs. · Performs managerial duties as assigned in the absence of the Laboratory Technical Director. · Ensures hospital compliance to federal, state and/or local regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies including participation in proficiency surveys, competency assessments and inspections. · Builds constructive working relationships with internal and external customers to ensure proper collection and testing of patient specimens and resolution of questions, complaints and/or concerns. · Trains new employees in the Microbiology Department and assesses competency in conjunction with the Education Coordinator at required intervals. · Acts as a technical resource for the Microbiology Department staff. · Provides Microbiology Department staff development through reviewing work completed and giving individualized feedback aimed towards performance improvement. · Organizes Microbiology Department staff meetings on a regularly scheduled basis to discuss and harmonize best practices and processes. · Reviews current and authors new policies, standard operating procedures, forms and protocols pertaining to the Microbiology Department. · Prepares and oversees the Microbiology Department's quality assurance/improvement and quality control programs and enforces a culture of quality throughout the department. · Compiles monthly Microbiology Department report for the Laboratory Technical Director. · Prepares quarterly blood culture contamination reports, quarterly epidemiological statistics and annual hospital antibiogram which are then presented to the Laboratory Department, Infection Control and Pharmacy. · Troubleshoots and implements process improvements to achieve greater efficiency and meet quality and/or hospital goals. · Maintains the needs of the Microbiology Department including ordering of established and evaluation of new supplies, products and equipment. Physical Demands and Working Conditions: · While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands along with fingers, to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl . Ability to lift twenty (20) pounds as well as assist with weights of more than one-hundred (100) pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods. Fine motor skills. Visual acuity including the ability to discern between different colors. · The employee is regularly required to multitask and remain focused and effective in high stress situations. Qualifications & Skills: · Education: A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. Required national certification by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent. · Training/Experience: Four (4) years of training/experience in a clinical Microbiology laboratory performing bacteriological culture reading. · Job Knowledge: Strong knowledge of bacteriological culture reading and interpretation, gram stain reading and interpretation, operation of equipment which performs bacterial identification and susceptibility testing as well as PCR testing. Complete operational ability in all laboratory areas. · Skills: Proficient with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and Microsoft Office especially Excel and Word. Job Posted by ApplicantPro
