Medical Assistant/Referral Clerk

Primary Purpose: The incumbent of this position will coordinate referrals for all medical providers; monitor insurance paperwork to assure timely processing and accurate authorization of referrals to external agencies and/or consultants. The person in this position is a member of the Patient Centered Health Care Home team where each team member plays an integral role in providing patient-centered health care. Essential Duties: Verify participation with various insurance plans to assure maximum reimbursement and most cost effective selection of referral services source. Ensure timely and accurate authorization of referrals for service. Complete referral paperwork. Communicate by telephone and mail with clients regarding insurance approval and appointment information. Verify patient eligibility for insurance coverage, under some instances will authorize approval for referrals. (ie: as insurance plan guidelines permit). Make thorough, accurate and timely documentation in electronic health record. Maintain patient confidentiality. Other Duties: Perform Medical Assistant related duties and other related duties as assigned Participate in orientation, teaching and development of other staff when asked to do so. Perform other related duties as assigned Observe safety and security procedures; determine appropriate actions beyond guidelines; report potentially unsafe conditions; use equipment and materials properly. Regular and reliable on-site attendance is required. Minimum Qualification Requirements: Education: High School Diploma or GED required, Post-secondary education preferred. Formal training in Medical Terminology required. Certified Coder preferred. Current Medical Assistant Certification required. Experience: At least one year of experience in clinical setting required. Previous experience in utilization management preferred. Experience in CPT, ICD9 coding preferred. Skills/Knowledge: Average knowledge in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
